Day 5: Out with the Bad (?), In with the Very Good
Day 5: Out with the Bad (?), In with the Very Good
Now that my tales of woe over caffeine withdrawal are fading quickly into the background, I think it’s time I turned to the subject of putting the good back into my body (and yours).
While I have already espoused the healthfulness and importance of turning to a vegetarian diet for your body, spirit and practice, now that I am eliminating some toxins from my system, I feel like I need to talk a little bit about what I plan to put inside my little “temple.” How fun (and positive) it is to think about what I actually can and should have in my diet for a change. And what my diet can do for me.
Now, the yoga connection. It’s not really news that eating the right foods is important to achieving a physical, mental and emotional balance. According to yogic literature, foods that are beneficial to us are considered Sattvic, or pure. So not only is it crucial to eliminate items like red meat, for example, it is equally important to infuse your body and spirit with nourishing foods.
Some of the more Sattvic, or “pure” selections that should always be on your shopping list include cereals, fresh fruits and vegetables, natural fruit juice, butter, milk, butter, beans of all kinds, honey and pure water.
Together, these foods are believed to create new energy and a clearer, calmer mind. More importantly, they will help you enhance your mental, physical and spiritual powers, ultimately elevating your practice and meditation.
I’ve already incorporated most of these wonderful foods into my daily diet, but have not yet experienced them minus the presence of my good old friends, caffeine and sugar cane. I’m already feeling better without those monkeys on my back, and am really looking forward to seeing how much better I will feel once I have a truly healthful and balanced diet to draw upon.
So let the healing and eating begin! My meditation has already begun to improve with the loss of the caffeine and processed sugar. I am really eager to discover what I can achieve using the right fuel to power my practice and grow.
Hope I am managing to change a few of your shopping lists along the way, too ;-)
Here’s to seeing you in the dairy aisle.
Peace.
