GF Video: Uneven Squats

by Kelly Turner on October 7th, 2008

Uneven Squats

Difficulty: Advanced

Equipment Needed: Bench, chair or other sturdy surface

Muscles Worked: Quads, glutes, hamstrings

Description: Start standing next to bench, place one foot on bench, toes pointing forward. Other foot should be on the ground, with weight evenly distibuted on each foot, keeping the chest up. Once in correct position, drive through the elevated heel so you are standing on top of bench on one foot.  Return to starting position landing softly on foot, bending knee into squat position. The potion should be smooth and continuous. **To increase difficulty, hold dumbell in hands.

***I forgot to mention this in the video- but you really want to keep your chest up with these, as well.

Great post! I’m all about the strength training but NOT all about the gym. This is a great exercise I can do at home. Thanks!

I used to do this because it was one of the exercises my phys. therapist suggested for avoiding knee injuries. But then I got lazy and forgot about it. My knees thank you for the reminder.

Killer! And seriously, it requires coordination. I would know. I’ve fallen down doing them before. lol.

I would NOT recommend trying these on, say, an office chair with wheels.
    But I did anyway!

monica- you bet! I love these and you can pretty much do them anywhere. you can even do them on stairs if you have a flight of stairs in your house.

tfh- you need ‘em with all that running you do. you’re a mad woman.

FBG- me too. at the gym. unfortunately my frst reaction is to go “WHOOPS!” all high pitched and squealy. No one said a word. that was the worst part. they just looked at me. i hate my gym.

Erin- why would you do that!? did you atleast get it on camera?

I like these ones that require so much focus and attention to performing them correctly… it makes them seem to go by faster:)

hmm, almost like a squat and step up combo… i’ll have to see if i can find a steady surface to try them on. oh, maybe the bleachers at the track! if there’s no one around to watch… :)

Wow, you do a very uneven squat. I feel like a wimp–I can only do this on my aerobic step.

Oh, and you look great in my Fig shirt!

And for any other preggos out there, these are recommended to help open the pelvis so baby can get in an optimal birthing position, say if baby is facing forward instead of backward, or breech. My doula even had me do these during labor–I just love it when I can multitask!
